The Movie That Landed Joey Bada$$ In Therapy

Joey Bada$$ Starred In The Oscar-Nominated Short Film “Two Distant Strangers”

Rapper, producer, and actor Joey Bada$$ recently revealed during an interview with XXL that he went to therapy after starring in the short film, “Two Distant Strangers.”

Two Distant Strangers is a short film that was released two years ago, on November 20, 2020. In the movie, Joey Bada$$ plays the role of Carter.

The film is inspired by the assassination of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed by police, following a widely protested and brutal summer in which innocent black people were killed and protesting was justified in most states.

During a recent interview with XXL, Joey Bada$$ expressed that the role he played in the short film was so intense that it landed him in therapy. He also discussed how difficult it was to get through filming because of how much emotion he had to draw from for the role.

“I'm not gon' lie, I had to do therapy after I shot Two Distant Strangers because it was a lot of internalization”: he said.“I remember the first scene in the movie when I'm coming out of the girl's apartment and the police see me and they slam me on the floor. I remember shooting that in real-time and it was people driving by, they would stop, and they would roll down their window and they'd be like, ‘Yo, is this real? Or is this for a movie? What's going on? You good?' It's traumatic for these innocent bystanders as well.”

In addition to not being paid, the Brooklyn native describes the project as an “experiment.”

“To tell the truth, I didn't even get paid for that,” he said. “It was a short film. It was a project. An experiment. We did the short film because originally, we were supposed to do a full-length feature film, a full movie. But once I got involved, it activated a lot of people. Once they saw my execution, everybody wanted to be a part of the production team now and that obviously helped it get pushed up in the Recording Academy and we won the Oscar.”

Joey Bada$$ appeared in “Colors Studios” on March 3, 2022, with a brand new song called “Head High,” which was picked up by Dilemaradio and became “The Top Track Of The Day on our social media pages.
