The Grammy Awards 2024, held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 4th, left audiences in disbelief as the event unfolded into a series of controversies, shocking wins, and unexpected arrests.
The evening began with what many are calling a blatant robbery, as Killer Mike walked away with three Grammys for Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album. The wins raised eyebrows, especially as they came at the expense of artists like Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj, and others who were considered strong contenders.
Lots of X (former Twitter) users jumped on the platform to share their thoughts, and one of them was the famous YouTuber Kai Cenat. He shared his take on Killer Mike snagging the Best Rap Album award over big names like Drake, Travis Scott, and Metro Boomin at the Grammys.
However, the drama didn’t stop there. Moments after receiving his awards, Killer Mike found himself in handcuffs and being escorted out of the venue.
According to a statement from the police, the artist, whose real name is Michael Render, was arrested due to a misdemeanor stemming from a physical altercation inside the Crypto.com Arena. The incident occurred on Chick Hearn Court, the street where the arena is located. The police statement confirmed that Render was detained, handcuffed, and transported to LAPD Central Division, where he was booked for Misdemeanor Battery 243(A) PC.
The 48-year-old musician was released at 8:37 pm and is scheduled to appear in court on February 29th in Los Angeles.
Killer Mike’s sixth studio album, “Michael,” secured the Best Rap Album award, while his track “Scientists and Engineers” claimed victories for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.
During his acceptance speeches, the rapper delivered powerful messages. When receiving his awards, he stated, “This is for all the people who think you’re too old to rap… we keep hip-hop alive. Never ever stop doing what you do.” Backstage, before his arrest, he reflected on age and life choices, saying, “The only thing that limits your age is not being truthful about your age or what you’re doing.”
“At 20 years old, I thought it was cool to be a drug dealer. At 40, I started to live with the regrets and the things I’ve done. At 45, I started to rap about it. At 48, I stand here as a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I’ve done.”
Despite the arrest, Killer Mike celebrated his third award by shouting, “Sweep! Atlanta, it’s a sweep!” The events have added another layer of complexity to the controversies surrounding the 2024 Grammy Awards, leaving fans and the music community eager for further updates and clarity on the situation.
On X (former Twitter) platform, Meek Mill expressed his views on both the Grammys and the arrest of Killer Mike. In a tweet, he wrote, “To arrest Killer Mike immediately after the Grammys propaganda… A lot of people are questioning the decision-making and bases of the award choosing in the Gen Z era… their timing to award black men be totally off!”
The controversy took a bizarre turn when the official Grammy Twitter account mistakenly announced Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice as winners of the Best Rap Song for “Barbie World.” This, despite Killer Mike having just accepted the award for the same category. The confusion led to speculation about the integrity of the awards process, with critics questioning how such a mistake could occur.
In a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), The Recording Academy congratulated Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice for their song “Barbie World,” featuring Aqua. The confusion arose during the live pre-show telecast when rapper Killer Mike was actually announced as the legitimate winner for his track “Scientists & Engineers,” featuring Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane.
The confusion added more fuel to the Grammys’ already messy situation. Nicki Minaj, who received two nominations for “Barbie World” (best song written for visual media and best rap song), lost in both categories, continuing her Grammy Award drought.
X users quickly expressed their bewilderment over the erroneous announcement, demanding an explanation and apology from The Recording Academy. One user tweeted, “The Grammys are fraudulent. You can hate Nicki Minaj’s guts but you can’t crazy this time because we all saw it. One of the industry’s most important nights in history making a “mistake” like this? I think not!”
Calls for an apology or official statement flooded social media, with one X user tweeting, “Gramy we all know you guys dirty job but anyway the industry owes Nicki Minaj an apology for mistakenly announced her on your offical page and still deleteing it.”
The 2024 Grammy Awards witnessed another moment of bold criticism as Jay-Z, a rap icon and entrepreneur, used his time on stage to address longstanding issues within the music industry, particularly regarding recognition at the Grammys.
Reflecting on his own history with the awards, Jay-Z recalled the 1998 Grammys when he boycotted the event after being nominated for Best Rap Album while DMX, who had two number-one albums that year, received no nominations. Drawing parallels with Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince boycotting in ’89, Jay-Z emphasized the need for transparency and fairness.
In his speech, Jay-Z expressed a desire for the Grammys to “get it right” and urged the audience to consider the subjectivity of music and opinions. He then turned attention to Beyoncé, noting her numerous Grammy wins but pointedly stating, “she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year.” The rapper challenged the metrics used by the Grammys, questioning their criteria for determining the most prestigious award.
“You know some of you are going to go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed. Some of you don’t belong in the category at all. No, no, no, no, no, that wasnt it.When I get nervous, I tell the truth,” Jay-Z declared, expressed the importance of honesty in addressing issues within the industry.
The Grammy drama is making everyone doubt if these awards are legit. Even big names like Drake didn’t trust them and straight-up skipped the event. Now, the mess at the 2024 Grammys is just adding more fuel to the fire. People are calling out the lack of transparency, fairness, and wondering if these awards really matter in the music world. It’s a wild ride of controversy shaking up the industry and the public’s perception of the Grammys.
As the Grammy’s chaos aftermath keeps rolling out, the music scene is waiting for the Recording Academy to step up, clear things up, and be held accountable.
