Irv Gotti, born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. on June 26, 1970, in Queens, New York, passed away on February 5, 2025, at the age of 54. As a co-founder of Murder Inc. Records, he was a key figure in shaping hip-hop and R&B music in the early 2000s. His work with artists like Ja Rule, Ashanti, Jay-Z, and DMX left a lasting impact on the music industry.
Growing up in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens, Gotti was exposed to a rich musical environment. He began his career as a DJ in his teens, which led him to the music industry. In the mid-1990s, he started working with Def Jam Recordings, where he played a role in signing and producing for artists such as Jay-Z and DMX. His production on Jay-Z’s “Can I Live” from the 1996 album Reasonable Doubt and DMX’s debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot in 1998 showcased his talent and vision.
In 1998, Gotti co-founded Murder Inc. Records with his brother, Chris Gotti. The label quickly became a powerhouse in the music industry, launching the careers of artists like Ja Rule and Ashanti. Ja Rule’s debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci, released in 1999, was a significant success, featuring hits like “Holla Holla.” Ashanti’s self-titled debut album in 2002 included chart-toppers such as “Foolish” and “Baby,” further cementing the label’s influence.
Gotti was known for blending hip-hop and R&B, creating a “Thug Love” sound that dominated the airwaves in the early 2000s. He produced numerous hits, including Ja Rule’s “Always On Time” and Ashanti’s “Foolish.” His collaborations extended to artists like Jennifer Lopez, for whom he produced the remix of “Ain’t It Funny,” and Fat Joe‘s “What’s Luv?” These tracks showcased his ability to craft songs that appealed to a broad audience.
In 2003, Murder Inc. faced legal challenges when federal agents raided their offices as part of an investigation into alleged connections with drug lord Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff. Gotti and his brother were accused of money laundering but were acquitted of all charges in 2005. Despite these challenges, Gotti continued to contribute to the music industry, rebranding Murder Inc. as The Inc. and signing artists like Lloyd and Vanessa Carlton.
In his later years, Gotti faced health issues, including diabetes, which led to a minor stroke in August 2024. He spoke openly about his condition, emphasizing the importance of enjoying life despite health challenges. His health remained a concern, and he suffered multiple strokes leading up to his passing.
Gotti’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from the music community. Def Jam Recordings released a statement expressing deep sorrow and highlighting his contributions to hip-hop and R&B. Lyor Cohen, a former executive at Def Jam, praised Gotti as a creative force in the industry. Artists like Ja Rule and Ashanti also shared their condolences, reflecting on the impact he had on their careers.
Irv Gotti’s influence on the music industry is unquestionable. Through his work with Murder Inc. Records, he introduced a unique sound that resonated with fans worldwide. Despite facing legal and health challenges, his dedication to music and his artists remained steadfast. As the industry mourns his passing, his legacy lives on through the timeless tracks he helped create and the artists he mentored.
