The nominees for the BET Hip Hop Awards have been announced, and no one is surprised by who made it onto the list.
The nominations for the 17th annual BET Awards were just announced, and it looks like Drake will win big: he picked up 14 nods while Kanye West racked up 10—including Hip Hop Artist of the Year. Kendrick Lamar didn’t get far behind with 9 nominations in total.
Other nominees are Baby Keem, Cardi B, and J. Cole with 6 each; Doja Cat, Latto, Lil Durk, Tems, and Young Thug all received 3 nominations each.
Fat Joe will host the awards ceremony. The Bet Awards will be held at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, GA on Friday, September 30 and will premiere Tuesday, October 4 at 9 PM ET/PT on BET. It will mark the 17th year that this event has taken place.
BET announced the event on Twitter: “FAT JOE DID!!”
“We bringing that culture back with one of the GODS of Rap! Make sure you catch Fat Joe hosting this year’s hip-hop awards on Thues, Oct 4th at 9/8c!!”
The BET caption reads, “We’re bringing back that culture.” Some people have commented on Twitter wondering which culture they are referring to.
While we’ve been seeing this same group of artists nominated year after year at these shows (and some years they don’t even show), many other hip-hop artists were left off this list despite having better Hip-Hop albums.
People reacted on social BET Awards nominees for the Album Of the Year. A Twitter user by the name of “HipHopConnoiseur” wrote: “I just don’t understand how people who dropped last year made this list. There were so many fire albums to come out of 2022 & none were nominated besides Kendricks.”
Nominees for best album of the year are Kendrick Lamar with Mr. Morales & The Big Steppers, Drake with Certified Lover Boy, Future with I Never Liked You, Kanye West with Donda, Pusha T with It’s Almost Dry and Nas with King’s Disease II.
While we at Dilemaradio respect the BET Awards and their nominees, we have to point out that their list doesn’t match up with Dilemaradio’s best hip-hop albums of 2022 at all.
People are getting tired to see the same artist get nominated year after year without seeing any real change in the quality of their music or their contribution to “hip-hop culture” as a whole.
It’s time for the BET Awards to get exciting again. Perhaps they should invite Will Smith as a guest host, and have him slap someone on stage—because right now it gets really repetitive.
Hip-Hop fans on social media reacted to the bet awards. Another Twitter user who goes by the name of B.M.A wrote: “Ain’t nobody really finna watch the BET Awards..”
A voting academy composed of roughly 500 members of the media, bloggers, and the “music industry” oversees nominating procedures. Voters suggest meritorious works and performers in all categories that they believe should be nominated; this information is then electronically submitted to BET for consideration by a panel of judges.
