Hip-hop's pioneers are not here for the disrespect.
DJ Akademikswent on a rant about hip-hop's pioneers, calling them dusty and broke. He also claimed that they are not as rich as today's artists. The remarks prompted LL Cool J to respond during an Instagram Live session, where he defended hip hop's pioneers by saying that they paved the way for everyone else in the game.
LL Cool J reacted on Instagram Live about Akademiks disrespect with his comment: “I haven't really been going live since the pandemic but this is something that came to my attention. It came to my attention that a “DJ” and I'm not gonna say any names because I don't think it's necessary.”
“A DJ basically said that a lot of the pioneers in hip-hop they're dusty or how can they be the person that invented hip-hop you know they don't have a lot of money or if they don't look or represent like they have a lot of dough right”: he went on to quote what Akademiks had mentioned in his video.
The hip-hop icon continued by saying: “Let me explain something to you and say this for you guys. Don't confuse someone's ability to develop a business model, don't conflate. In other words, don't think just because somebody knows how to get money or fails to get the money that they didn't make a contribution to the culture.”
Akademiks' disrespect of hip-hop pioneers is nothing new; he has made similar comments in the past. But it's important that we don't allow him (or anyone else) to diminish the contributions of these talented musicians since they were gifted artists who contributed to the creation and shaping of a form of music that is now hugely popular.
