In the constantly changing music scene, Drake, a name that screams success, just dropped his brand-new album, “For All The Dogs,” on Friday, October 6th. The hype around this album was real, with fans and folks in the music biz eagerly waiting to see what the Canadian hip-hop superstar had up his sleeve. And here’s the kicker – even before the album hit the shelves, Drake was already getting tons of love and attention, thanks in large part to die-hard supporters like Akademiks.
DJ Akademiks, a well-known fan of Drake, took to the internet to promote the artist relentlessly. News outlets and social media platforms buzzed with excitement about the upcoming release. It seemed as though, regardless of the album’s actual quality, Drake was guaranteed to capture the views, attention, and praise of the music world, as he always had.
However, amidst the sea of praise, there emerged a dissenting voice. Joe Budden, a former rapper known for his candid and unfiltered opinions on music, voiced his honest critique of Drake’s album during an episode of the JoeBuddenTV podcast. This critique didn’t sit well with Drake, who took to social media to express his thoughts.
In a strongly worded message dedicated to Joe Budden, Drake accused him of failing in the music industry and leaving it behind for more financially stable pursuits. Drake went on to suggest that Joe Budden’s opinions should not affect aspiring artists, referring to him as “the poster child of frustration and surrender.”
On his social media page, Drake posted the next message: “Joe Budden you have failed at music. You left it behind to do what you are doing in this clip cause this is what actually pays your bills. For any artist watching this just remember you are watching a failure give their opinion on his idea of a recipe for success…a quitter give their opinion on how to achieve longevity…you switched careers cause the things that pop into your brain had you broke living cheque to cheque and the raps you write had 450 men showing up to your shows in dusty Enyce jeans to screw up their face to Mood Muzik 29 and pretend you are the goat…pls to any artist that’s doing what they feel is right don’t let these opinions affect your mindset after the fact…this guy is the poster child of frustration and surrending.
He continued, “You retired and we never hung up your jersey; we don’t remember your number. We know you for doing this…you withdrew from rap not cause you accomplished all you need to; it’s cause it wasn’t working for you. I never want anybody in the generations to think that the whole ‘everybody’s entitled to their opinion’ is a real thing…this is a man projecting his own self-hate, and the fact I did and continue to do everything he wanted to do for himself.”You retired and we never hung up your jersey we don’t remember your number. We know you for doing this..you withdrew from rap not cause you accomplished all you need to it’s cause it wasn’t working for you.”
He further highlighted: “If you need it put in simpler terms, I own a 767…he owns a modest house in the 973 and flies first class on special occasions.”
Drake’s reaction to Joe Budden’s criticism shows that he’s more sensitive to critiques than one might expect, despite the notion that he should be immune to them. Although Joe Budden has the right to express his thoughts, it’s important to remember that music is a matter of personal taste, and not everyone will see eye to eye on it.
Here at Dilemaradio, as an independent hip-hop radio station, we made the call not to push Drake’s recent album because it simply didn’t connect with our rap-loving audience. It’s a classic case of music being subjective – what’s a hit for one crowd might not vibe with another. However, we do recognize that Drake’s music could easily find its groove on different platforms, especially those aiming at a wider, more mainstream audience.
On their podcast, Joe Budden shared his nostalgia for Drake who used to connect with rap enthusiasts. He pointed out that Drake now appears to be leaning toward a younger, more mainstream crowd. This conversation sparked a discussion about motivation and the unique challenges that artists encounter once they attain the level of success that Drake has achieved.
When it comes to Joe Budden’s critique, it definitely got some people nodding in agreement. On the flip side, there’s this ongoing debate about artists like Drake, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar. These guys have reached a level of stardom where they seem to get praise no matter what they put out. This kind of adoration from fans can sometimes make it hard for honest critiques to get through. It’s like there’s an army of fans on the internet ready to defend their favorite artists at all costs.
Dilemaradio also pointed out how the music industry often treats rap music and pop music differently. They used Dave East as an example, a rapper known for his consistently good work but not getting the recognition he deserves when compared to pop artists. It’s a situation where rap music often feels like it’s pushed aside, and rappers like Dave East are left in the shadows while pop music takes the spotlight. This highlights the tough reality of the music industry, where the essence of hip-hop, rooted in street sounds and authentic storytelling, can sometimes get overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of pop music.
The Drake vs. Joe Budden feud serves as a reminder that music is all about personal taste, and everyone’s entitled to their own opinions. We, at Dilemaradio, respect that Drake has his fan base, even if his music doesn’t quite sync with our focus on rap. Drake’s album “For All the Dogs” may not make it onto Dilemaradio’s hip-hop chart, but we know that Billboard has a lot of influence and still pushes pop music. We are confident that Billboard will continue to propel Drake to the top of the music industry.
Drake doesn’t need to be overly concerned about others in the vast and diverse music industry, where everyone has their own audience and platform to flourish. This ongoing feud between Drake and Joe Budden is just another fascinating chapter in the ever-evolving narrative of the music industry.
