On the evening of June 31, 2024, the Ignite Music Festival in Vancouver, B.C. became the scene of an unexpected altercation involving hip-hop star Rick Ross. Following his performance, which concluded around 10:30 p.m. local time, Ross was sucker-punched as he left the main stage area. The incident was even more dramatic as Kendrick Lamar’s diss track to Drake, “Not Like Us,” played through the speakers. This track is significant due to Ross’s ongoing feud with Drake, a Toronto native.

As soon as Ross was hit, a full-blown brawl erupted. Videos circulating online show punches flying, and at one point, one of Ross’s associates was knocked unconscious and had to be carried away to safety.

The next morning, Rick Ross assured everyone that none of his crew members were seriously injured. He also expressed his eagerness to return to Vancouver, calling the city “beautiful.”

To show he was in good spirits, Ross posted a photo on Instagram Stories, laughing in front of a private jet with the caption, “Vancouver, it was fun. Until next time.”

The incident did not go unnoticed by other hip-hop stars. 50 Cent, always quick to comment on drama, posted a clip on Instagram of Ross seemingly making a “great escape” during the brawl. He captioned it, “LMAO THE GREAT ESCAPE! MEEKA CALL THE CHASERS, THEY ARE CHASING ME. LOL.”

Additionally, 50 Cent shared another video expressing his thoughts on the incident.: “I hope that brother made it home safely… I hope that he has a better sense of what to do and what not to do while you are out in the world… he might need to get the Dreamchasers or the 305 killers?”

Drake, who was not involved in the altercation, liked an Instagram post recapping the fight. He also shared a video on his page, all smiles, wishing everyone a Happy Canada Day despite the drama involving Ross.

Several celebrities took to social media to express their concerns and call for peace in the hip-hop community. Marlon Wayans shared a message on Instagram, urging artists to stop the violence and support one another. His post read:

“Dear hip-hop, It’s all fun and games until people start getting hurt. Remember this, HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF! I knew Tupac, I knew Biggie. I partied with them, hung out with them, saw them both 20 minutes before they got shot. Violence is real. Everyone can be touched. Don’t entertain the devil. I love @champagnepapi (Drake), love @richforever (Rick Ross), love @kendricklamar, love @losangelesconfidential (The Game), and I say to all my brothers there’s enough for everyone to eat. Y’all all need to do what @realcoleworld (J.Cole) did. Walk away from the nonsense. With peace, with love, with positivity. Life is short…even shorter if you spend your energy on breaking each other down instead of building each other up. Hate seeing any of our kings at war. We are too few. STOP! And I say this with love. Always OG MW.”

The tension between Drake and Rick Ross has been brewing for a while. Earlier this year, Drake took shots at Ross in his diss track “Push Ups.” Ross responded with “Champagne Moments,” where he claimed Drake had cosmetic surgery, mocking him as “BBL Drizzy.”

It’s not clear what started the fight, but it shows there’s ongoing tension in hip-hop. As fans, let’s hope that the call for peace from artists like Marlon Wayans is heard and that the focus shifts back to what matters: the music.
