On Tuesday night, May 3, 2022, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, comedian Dave Chapelle was attacked on stage by an armed man as he performed as part of “Netflix Is A Joke Fest.”
The comedian was in the middle of a joke when an armed man rushed to the stage and attempted to tackle him to the ground. Luckily, he was surrounded by a group of over a dozen people who quickly fought off the attacker and gave him a proper beatdown.
Although audience members were asked to place their phones in particularly protected cases, some were able to capture the event.
Several security guards raced to the podium and pursued the man, according to the videos. They encircled him, repeatedly punching him.
Chappelle was carried away after the assault, but he returned to the stage with a few jokes about the incident.
“It was a trans man,” Chappelle joked about the assailant after it was all over.
As a result of the crazy situation, Chris Rock, who was in the arena, took his chance to make his first joke about Will Smith’s historic Oscar slap. Rock took the mic and joked: “Was that Will Smith?”
As of Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police reported that the attacker had a fake gun that held a real knife blade.
The attacker who is identified as Isaiah Lee suffered multiple bruises as well as an arm dislocation during the altercation. He was taken away in an ambulance shortly after the incident occurred.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and his bail was set at $30,000.
Isaiah Lee’s motivation for the attack on Dave Chappelle remains a mystery.
There were a number of celebrities who attended the Netflix is a Joke Festival, including Elon Musk, P. Diddy, and Gunna.
