Doja Cat Wins Best R&B Singer At The BBMAs, But Not Everyone Is Happy

The BBMAs Have Been Criticized For Not Awarding Summer Walker

The Billboard Music Awards on NBC on Sunday drew the lowest audience in the ceremony's decades-long history, making it the latest award show to see ratings drop this year.

Despite the absence of major winners such as Olivia Rodrigo and Kanye West, Doja Cat was honored with four Billboard Music Awards, two of which she won live in Las Vegas.

Doja Cat defeated GIVON, Silk Sonic, Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak, Summer Walker, and The Weeknd for the first award for Top R&B Artist for her album Planet Her.

“It's just wonderful to be here tonight with everybody, and, yeah, thank you, mom, and, yeah, that's it”: were Doja's words.

The R&B singer Summer Walker was not nominated for any R&B awards at the BBMAs, despite Doja Cat winning all of the genre's categories.

Summer Walker supporters have responded harshly to Doja Cat's victories, especially because Walker did not win a single prize while Doja Cat, who is in fact a pop singer, won all of the R&B categories.

Doja is also considered one of the best rap artists which is in fact an insult to the skilled hip-hop artists out there. The Mooo! artist is indeed a great “POP” artist.

Even though ‘Planet Her' is described as an R&B/ Soul, Pop, and Afrobeats record, Walker's boyfriend, LVRD Pharoh, was the first to criticize how Doja Cat won the categories.

Dilemaradio's producer who's known for playing the best hip-hop and rap music said: “One thing is certain: the BBMAs only care about numbers/sales, not music categories, and they are the ones who decide who is going to be trendy, popular, and on top of the game, convincing the world that pop artists are rappers/R&B singers.”

In now-deleted IG Stories, LVRD Pharoh said: “Billboard explain to me how a Pop artist Doja Cat wins 2 r&b categories???? And she has 1 r&b song ever?”

Walker's boyfriend continued saying referring to Doja: “No one is knocking her artistry at all. She's an amazing ‘POP' artist. But r&b is r&b. SZA, Summer, and Given should have won because they are the actual artist for the category! It's not about Summer winning it's about respecting the culture of r&b. In the 2000s none of this ‘pop-based music' would have been considered r&b because it's not that! God bless everybody.”

Walker on the other hand posted the following message: “Well this was an interesting night, congrats to everyone but not 1 r&B win. Hm. Guess I just need to work harder lol Larry come break my heart.”
