MEHDI BLACK WIND is a rapper out of Morocco who built his whole name roasting the government in his bars. Dude does not hold back. Last week, according to Al Jazeera, cops pulled him off a flight to France in Casablanca and locked him up before he could even leave the country. The charge is basically insulting a government institution, and reports say it goes back to a song called Pegasus he dropped five years ago. Five years later and they finally decided the bars hit too hard. Wild timing, honestly.
So here’s the wild part. The song getting Mehdi locked up isn’t even new. It’s called Pegasus and it’s FIVE YEARS OLD. According to Al Jazeera, Moroccan authorities charged him with INSULTING A CONSTITUTIONAL INSTITUTION because of lyrics in that track. Nobody’s publicly dropped the exact bars he supposedly crossed the line with, so take the specifics with a grain of salt.
What we do know is he’s sitting in jail right now waiting on a trial that just got pushed to July 31 because the lawyers in Morocco are on strike. So a five year old song is holding up his whole life while paperwork gets sorted. Wild timing for a country that apparently has a long memory.
THIS AIN’T A QUIET PROTEST. Footage shared by AJ English shows a crowd packed outside a Casablanca courthouse today, screaming for Mehdi Black Wind to walk free. People held signs, chanted, and basically told the whole legal system to hurry up and let their guy go. Real support, real noise.
BUT HERE’S THE ANNOYING PART. The judge just pushed the whole trial back to JULY 31. Why? Lawyers in Morocco are on strike right now, so the court basically hit pause. That means Mehdi sits and waits even longer while everyone outside keeps yelling his name. Justice moving at the speed of a Wi-Fi router from 2009.
Protesters gathered outside a court in Casablanca, Morocco, demanding the release of rapper Mehdi El Youbi, known by his stage name “Mehdi Black Wind.”
